Neat. Rocks Or Mixers

Written by Kang | Aug 2, 2018 11:25:20 AM

" Neat or on the rocks? " is a question that echos at every whisky bar. or at least most that I've been to.

There seems to be an eternity of debate on how one should drink whisky. Some like it neat. some need it on the rocks while others want some mixers. To this I say. Should this matter?

Its all about taste and preferences. They'll do them and I'll be happy doing me.

Here's how i like mine:

1st glass: Always Neat

Felt that I wont be doing the whisky justice if I didn't savour its purest most original, untouched taste.

Start off by:

(1) Pour two finger "level" amount of whisky into a glass.

(2) Smell!

Before you take any sip, you want to get your nose in the glass and take a hearty whiff. But not stuff your face into the glass.

What do you smell?

- sweet, woody, fruity?

That first sniff will largely be just alcoholic, and might clear your nostrils a little bit. Give it a second and third sniff and you’ll get some of the true whiskey flavors.

(3) Take a small sip.

Enough to roll the liquid around in your mouth. Wait a little. dont be in a rush to swallow it right away. Try to pick out different tastes. Key here is to enjoy it slowly, you're not on a sprint to drain your glass. Enjoy the process, the conversations or company with friends. Or if you're by yourself, enjoy your deep thoughts, I guarantee you it will be a mindful journey.

If you're in the mood for more (I usually will be), here's how i would do the next one.

2nd glass (same whisky) >> NEAT + Water

* you can definitely try other whiskies here. I like the simplicity of having only one type for company per time.

If you are trying out a different brand or type or whisky, probably would be a good idea to wash down your palate first with water.

Ok here goes:

WATER!

(1) Add water depending on how diluted you'll like the taste. Try and error! For me, I like to add a little luke warm water. Not more than half a shot glass's worth.

This. I find lightly dilutes the whisky to bring out the scent and taste even more.

(2) Repeat rest of the steps above!

The thing with taste and preferences is that its so subjectively defining. It's your style and how you like it.

Stick to what works best for you but be open to unknown adventures. When visiting a new bar or meeting a new friend, try how the bartender/friend would serve/drink it. You just maybe in for a treat!
